I'd try the Beaufort St Merchant, 492 Beaufort St, Highgate. I only had a coffee there, but the breakfast menu looked small but tasty.
Breakfast in Perth is, as a rule, dire compared to Melbourne. Usually expensive, unimaginative and of ordinary quality. That being said, try:
- John St Cafe, Cottesloe (fantastic free-range eggs and organic toast, beautiful gluten-free bread, wonderful coffee and juices)
- Coode St Cafe, Mt Lawley (delicious homely food, reminds me of the Rowena Parade Milk Bar, try the muesli trifle of berries, athena ypghurt and natural muesli)
- Harvest, North Fremantle
- e Cucina, Hay St CBD
- The Walk, Subiaco (fabulous French toast)
- Cafe 130, Oxford St Leederville (they serve New Norcia bread which is easily WA's finest, and lovely lemon curd)
The CBD is frankly fairly disappointing -- there are plenty of horrid breakfasts to be had so it's probably best to eat on someone's recommendation...
hands down the best is Tiger Tiger in murray St down a little laneway (near a Country road store, from memory). Very Melbourne (with good weather). great coffee and brekfasts. I go there every time I'm in town.
If money isn't an issue and you want an experience: Indiana's Tea House Cottosloe. Brilliant but not cheap.
As a former Perthite, I can vouch for Cafe 130 (great coffee) as well as the Indiana Tea House in Cottesloe- both very nice.
Cafe Villa on the corner of Oxford and Newcastle is another good one.

Cheers

King Street Cafe in the CBD has rather lovely breakfasts and excellent coffee.
thanks for all the comments so far, i hope julie is reading and following your advice. cheers, JW
For really good coffee and perfect poached eggs you should head to Soto in Mount Lawley - across from The Queens.
You have to try the breakfast at Bluewater Grill in Applecross - on a lovely day with blue skies, it is perfect! They probably serve one of the best buffet breakfasts in Perth @ $27.50 for the works, including smoked salmon and sometimes even steak. It overlooks the swan river and if you sit outside, it is the perfect way to spend the weekend! Enjoy!
Cheers, Liz
I second the comment that breakfast in Perth is dire compared to Melbourne (having just returned from 6 years there - I recommend Touks in Seddon by the way). Anyway in Perth I love Harvest, North Fremantle (although you can't order your eggs any way than what is on the menu and it's only open weekends) and Sayers in Leederville (good coffee and food looks great).
This has nothing to do with Perth.
How come you still haven't reviewed Cafe 394 in Nicholson?
The big breaky is the number one meal in Melbourne on price, size and taste.
I insist you try it.
Definitely King St Cafe - a great place day and night.
I would avoid Cafe 130 and Harvest... don't believe the hype. TERRIBLE service and shit coffee at both of late. I accept that the resources boom has made it difficult to get good staff, but the coffee at 130 is shocking, and I recently had to wait 45 (!!!) minutes for a flat white at Harvest, despite politely enquiring as to its whereabouts twice. My vote for good brekkie in Perth would, as above, go to Tiger Tiger. I also love Cafe Cafe in Subi. The staff are great and always pleasant, the coffee is joy and the food very decent also. I couldn't say any of these three things for 130 or Harvest anymore (sadly - they both used to be worthy of their reputations).
A new find in Freo blew our minds when we went for breakfast last Sunday....Maraschino, near the Millenium cinema (sorry dont know the street name). It specialises in teas and you get a pot with a little timer that goes off when it's steeped to perfection. The menu is incredible...we had Green eggs and Ham (with bacon substituted) and it was a huge serve of poached eggs, pesto and toasted ciabatta. we'll be there next sunday for sure.
If you're ever around Fremantle area, there's a nice nook along South Terrace that my partner and I frequent especially on weekends - Aubergines. Their coffee is excellent, breakfast menu is biggish and just a good atmosphere. Always like the friendly staff....
Wow, very interesting comments.
Unfortunately I agree with Gem - Harvest used to be the best in town but now it seems just resting on their laurels. I had a similar experience Gem - 2hrs later, what a shame. Still very good for dinner though!
Anyway, B/fast in Perth.......
Aubergine for sure, don't want to say too much because it's already too busy. Vans in Cott is worth a look too! I havent heard of Tiger Tiger must check it out. Although, who wants to go in to the city of Perth on Sunday morning?
anyone tried The grill at hillarys? I have and the breakfast ar great! 12$ big breakfast all winter long you can't lose. New menu new chefs definately an improvement. i'll be going back.
I agree with the previous comment about Harvest and Oxford 130 how they are over-rated.
For a great cup of coffee or great breakfast (or both!), my personal favourites would have to be:
Aubergine (Freo)
Maraschino (Freo) - gotta be the BEST!!! It was the best kept secret :(
Lincoln's (Highgate)
Dancing Goat (Swanbourne)
Deli Chichi (Mt Claremont)
Tiger Tiger (City)
Voyager (near Hillary's)
p/s I've been on a trip to Melb seeking out the best breakfast and coffee places. Must admit prices great, food very creative but we can now find all of that in Perth. So far on top of my list is Maraschino. Prices very very cheap, food creativity is excellent!!
Deli Chi Chi in Mt Claremont is always awesome. At the moment their porridge with honey and banana is excellent. And they are more than happy to make it with soy milk. It is my absolute fav!! John St Cafe in Cott is good, as is Barachetta in Cott (though their coffee is not great). Cimibilio in Dalkeith is also good, with great coffee.
Without a doubt, Book Caffe in Swanbourne. Great service, fantastic food and you can relax with a book. Beautiful!
yes. food in general is a dire state of affairs in Perth....
Tiger Tiger is a lovely spot for weekdays but I don't think it fits the bill for a lazy weekend brekky/brunch.
I also have a long running problem with the eggs served at Tiger Tiger (and many other venues listed here) in that they use premixed hollandaise sauce rather than make their own... EWW!
I'm my opinion this is unforgivable of any restaurant particularly when the prices being demanded are so outrageously expensive.
Te best breakfast that I have found whilst living in Perth is
Soda - 251 West Coast Drive - just across the road from the beach only a little further on from Scarborough and Trigg.
I will never go back to Tiger Tiger again... We had a breakfast there the other weekend. They mixed up our meals, overcharged us and then after waiting 40 minutes for our food, my boyfriend bit into a piece of toast with a rock in it, which shattered his tooth!!! The staff were really nice about it but the manager was absolutely horrible, and we ended up having to foot a rather hefty dentist bill for it.....
Definitely not worth it!!! i have also heard some other similar reports- would advise against NOT going.
mmm.. Breakfast! One thing Perth can be anoying for is All Day Breakfasts... no chance for a nice weekend sleep-in and a nice breakfast whenever: My favourite places for all day breakfasts must be: Source - Highgate (opposite the Brisbane hotel - especially for the health concious), Vans (Cottesloe), Cimibilio Dalkeith & Cottesloe opposite Vans - they only serve till 1pm tho -their bircher is the best), deffinetly Maraschino (Freo - only till 3pm - great bircher, eggs and good servings). If you do manage to wake up early: King st caf'e in the CBD on Kings St (one of the best places for cakes in perth - especially Banana cheese cake!), Tiger Tiger has a nice atmossphere but limited menu, Voyager North Beach (untill 2pm I think - they do quite large servings and nice Poached free range egss), Tarts on lake st (although they don't use free range). What i like about these places is that they are clean and food quality is good. Vans can be slack somethimes and I wud avoid cafe 130 in leederville (Dirty!)...Beaufort st merchant also pretty limited. I have been meaning to try Oceanus in City Beach for their Sunday buffet although never seem to get up early enough! EAT cafe in Shenton park on Nicholson road also do nice bircher and eggs. Personally do not like the atmoshere at Cafe Villa, Leederville. I have heard there is a really nice French Pastery in Leederville(near Kalis), also a nice one on Bulwer st called Papilion (with blue umbrella's at the front) ... that's all for now.. time to try some of the places you guys have reccomended!
I thought an update on some of the older comments as well as some additional insight might be helpful.
tiger, tiger is brilliant. Clare runs it, she and Jackson make the best coffee in town. The all-day breakfast menu is great. Try 'The Tiger' or the tiger baked eggs.
Cafe 130 is unfortunately useless now (after so many years!). The staff does not care, the place is dirty, and if you are lucky the ceiling will cave in on you and kill you before you have to drink their coffee. Also, no more New Norcia bread.
Boucla in Subi is fantastic (Rokeby Road near Heytesbury).
The Dancing Goat in Swanbourne is run by Annie. What a great new(ish) place! It is simply fantastic.
Sayers in Leederville (near Carr/Newcastle corner) makes the best scrambled eggs in town. Their owner/chef Mark is a godsend (used to cook for Tarts). Good coffee and cakes, too.
Deli Chicchi in Applecross is the last place I'll mention. A nice menu, lots of yummy things to buy and more good coffee.
There are many others and while Perth lags behind Melbourne in quality and variety, the places I mentioned above could easily survive in either city.
I have just started a blog for specifically reviewing Perth Breakfasts! It's not as dire as we think, there is just a lack of reviews and knowledge as to where is great for the most important meal of the day!
Check out http://perthbreakfastbitch.blogspot.com/
Cafe 130 in Leederville, Western Australia offers rude service and average food. Bring a cloth to clear and wipe your table.
Well there's a new place that everyone must give a go- Toast in East Perth, next door to the Royal Hotel. Not only for it's food but the ambience and decor is great! It has a real French Riviera feel to it- not in a daggy way, but in a real cool French way. You almost fell like you're a Brit on holiday! Does that make sense?
Anyway they have all day breakfast 7-7, 7 days a week, which means you can sleep in all day on Sunday and still get a great breakfast. I recommend the corn fritters with avocado, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce.
One thing which I think sets and average cafe from a great cafe is when they do their own baking- and toast does a great job of it, from a variety of cakes etc to even their own bagels which were delish!
Riverbank Estate Winery in the Swan Valley serves an amazing breakfast and is very popular! The restaurant has a great view over a vineyard too.
Atomic in Mends St South Perth has a huge breakfast menu and great coffee.
Perth's Best breakfast pancakes can be found in Beaconsfield, Hilton and Fremantle area. They do not use premix formulas to make their pancake offerings. Freshly made and worth the travel and with no threat of parking fees or fines it is worth the trip.
They had a Sunday Times review and you can read it on the website, www.pancaketalk.com.au.
I love the service from owners who love what they are doing, this means they have fresh food, clean premises and service with a smile.
I recommend Lincolns in Highgate or West End Deli in West Perth.
One of my favourite places is the Rose Heritage Gardens, Mills Road, Carmel. The coffee is fantastic, the food simple, fresh and tasty and served beautifully with rose petals depending on the season. It's also open at 8am which I like being a fairly early riser. The views over the rose gardens and natural bush area are wonderful. The staff have always been friendly.
unfortunately, although Tiger Tiger do have some wonderful food and coffee, the owner/manager is an absolute nightmare and seems to have no idea how to communicate with customers. This women has made mine and several friend's experiences at her cafe particularly unenjoyable on numerous occasions and none of us will be returning. You can excuse a venue for this sort of behaviour and outcome once; everyone has bad days. But several times is just not good enough.
I will have to agree with Gem. Harvest hype is getting silly. They stopped doing good coffee a fair while ago. If I could add some south of the River options; Hubble's Yard on George - Fremantle, Ciocolatto Espresso in Applecross and Atomic in South Perth - Mends St. Am going to check out this Tiger Tiger place though to make my own call. Will advise.
Like the previous post I decided to check out Tiger Tiger too. Yes the coffee is great but the service definitely not so great. OK, I accept that the there are no variations on the menu but really the staff member at the counter seemed offended that I had even asked for a side of spinach. When I asked for a vanilla latte for my partner the response was a harsh
"ahhh no we don't do that sort of thing here" god forbid that there might be a smile or a sorry for the uncultured peasant who dares request a different coffee. I then wanted to pay by eftpos and was told to stand aside while the people behind me in the line were served (is eftpos really that time consuming?) and had to restate what I had ordered after waiting so she could add it up again. Now for the next part despite having stated my order twice my partner's breakfast failed to arrive. This was noticed by one waitress and we presumed something would be done about it but no it took a second waitress to go back to the kitchen and arrange this. By this time I had to go ahead and eat mine alone to avoid it being stone cold by the time he got his. The one saving grace is when his breakfast finally arrived the very nice waitress offered free coffee and an apology so granted there was an effort to smooth things over. So yeah the coffee was good and the poached eggs perfect but probably not enough good points to cover up the poor service. Won't be making a special effort to return.
Wild Poppy on Wray Ave in Fremantle does brilliant breakfasts and lunch - well worth visiting!
Tiger Tiger has terrible service, I waited an hour for my meal whilst my friend's went cold.
Lincolns Highgate, Zekka King St, Cantina Mt Lawley, Sayers Leederville, Toast East Perth, the Imp Victoria Park and il Circlo in North Perth are great.
Boucla in Subi now does breakfast, it is simple smaller serves but cheaper and tasty and the cake there is the best in Perth.
I love love The Wild Fig. You can't go past a good breakfast, fantastic smoothie and a business with a good ethical outlook.
www.wastyle.blogspot.com
The best breakfastin Perth in my eyes goes to Cafe D'Vine (formerly Old Cottage Cafe) in Midland. Brian the owner is out there serving with his staff talking to his customers.
They make the most amazing hollandaise sauce so no matter what we order (within reason) we order a side of hollandaise. They also use homemade bread absolutely delicious.
Great food, great service you cant go past it.
WILD POPPY on wray ave ,fremantle has great coffee, fresh tasty breakfasts(they only serve stuff they make themselves, so no horrible premixed hollandaise or vegemite!),friendly service and comfy lounge areas.
I'm yet to receive my breakfast from tiger tiger, but the attitude of the staff and the blatant rudeness to some customers has put me off the breakfast here, despite how good the food could potentially taste. If you are here for the food I can't yet comment, but if you'd like to enjoy your breakfast I'd suggest you look elsewhere (I have as yet had nothing but good times from many of the cafes along the Mt Lawley strip!)
Marsachino in freo is hands down brilliant!! Aubergines and the old swan brewery take second place. but the best in WA is hands down: Goanna Gallery in Dunsborough Near simmos icecream.
I have been meeting for breakfast with a group of old work colleagues every month for 15 years now and lived in Dunsborough for 6, and I have to agree with Gero that Goanna Gallery in Dunsborough has the BEST breaky! Recently tried The Dizzy Witch Cafe,(opp Northbridge Hotel) which was very nice along with the Millpoint Caffe Bookshop South Perth - cosy atmosphere being among books and King St Cafe, which my hubby claims it has the best Eggs Hollandaise. The Wild Fig Swanbourne also has good food in a great setting. Service was good in all the above. In agreement with a previous review, Soto Mt Lawley does have the best coffee. I buy their coffee beans to use a home. Check them all out.
100 per cent agree with the comments on tigertiger cafe, rude staff and slow service, its a shame as it is a nice venue.
Sayers in leederville truly has the best breakfast in Perth!!! It's fantastic, all unique and simply delicious! Recently went to toast in east Perth which had delicious cheesy scrambled eggs and fantastic juices! Wild if has a great veggie breakfast and toscanninis in hillarys is always yum! I really want to try crumpets in vic park apparently it is wonderful and they make their own crumpets! Go figure? Going to beaufort st merchant this weekend!
Hyatt Hotel buffet breakfast is suprisingly good.
stimulatte , 361 Hay st, subiaco and Moore and Moore, Freo
The Dizzy Witch in North Perth is the best I've found with Sayers in Leederville a close second. If you can get a table then John St. Cafe in Cottesloe is pretty good. Mrs. S in Maylands is also a great brekky venue!
