Palomino, Northcote

They may only do boiled eggs (baked too, if you count the specials), but Palomino, 236 High Street, Northcote, Tel +61 3 9481 0699, does them very well indeed. Nice golden-yolked, soft-boiled, free-range googs, done just right. Giddy up.

palomino

Style-wise, the Northcote Palomino has nothing in common with the American chain that shares its name. It's very much a quirky, studenty, one-off original. It's a place where you can get a bowl of Coco Pops for three bucks. Or a chutney cheese melt for $5.50. Or, in my case, "eggs from the shell" with a very thick and tasty serve of house-made baked beans and a few chunks of fetta. Yum yum.

Very good coffee too. Not to mention the retro, two-tone brown plates, saucers and matching sugar bowl.

15/20 "eggs from the shell"

hello,

I'm so happy to have found your blog. Breakfast is my favourite meal to go out for, not enough people here take it seriously! I have been wanting to try Palomino since it opens. My gut had a good feeling....

I had a sensation breakfast butty from Chimmeys on Bridge Rd. this weekend, perfect egg, cheese and spinach on fabulous sourdough, for a fiver, so good I almost wept. Apparently they are now to be baking at the Abbotsford convent too....

Unfortunately seems like another case of too-cool-for-school 30somethings thinking they can run a cafe. Completely unprofessional service, 25 minute wait for a coffee and food still hadn't arrived when we left after an hour waiting. Many other dissatisfied customers wondering what was going on: clearly one chef working in an area smaller than a breakfast bar can't cook for nearly 20 tables. Great way to ruin your weekend.

a regular who visits palomino weekly, each time introducing it to new people, persisting, persisting as its location is very convenient but finally refusing to pay consistently sour service from near all staff ( a couple of exceptions purely because they smile occasionally). the atmosphere is that of a cafe where the last thing they want are customers.
really disappointed and quite fed up with people who think being happy or friendly is uncool.

Totally agree with previous commenters about the attitude in this place - such a tense vibe, and certainly not what you want to start your day off with... A shame, cos the coffee and food is decent.

I agree. I've been in hospitality for eight years, cooking in cafes (some with tiny tiny breakfast bars in lieu of a full size kitchen).
If you ignore your customers needs, then why are you even in hospitality to begin with?
For all the hype, I don't dig Palomino.

Ha! So funny! The Palomino staff are assholes. Hopefully the new owners can make that change??

Oh. Palaminos.
Its changed so much recently. The staff are friendly and welcoming.
The new owner puts a great amount of effort into talking to customers.
The coffee is perfect and table service has finally begun.
I used to go there a couple of years ago but got sick of the arrogance. having returned in the last few months i'm so happy to feel welcome and sit down for a soy latte and a rosemary mushroom bruscetta.

Oh love it - this is Palomino on the nose. I was only there a month ago and despite my to die for baked eggs and good (although luke warm) coffee. The staff were just dreadful, snooty, sour. One of my fellow diners dared to ask for her coffee to be reheated in the microwave and just about had it thrown in her face! In the end when we paid, one of the kitchen staff came out to tally the bill as the waitress' were talking amoungst themselves and he drastically undercharged us - we let him. We felt it was a small price to pay for for the victimisation we had experienced at the hands of the the staff. Palomino - you suck.

I have just moved to Northcote and have been to Palomino a couple of times after reading the mixed reviews and I can not go past the spinach baked eggs. The times that I have been there the staff have been good. and I discovered a hidden courtyard which reminds me of my nana's back yard.
