Ray is not just interesting. That is a huge under statement. It was the first cafe in Brunswick to make briliiant coffee and have great food. The coffee set the standard for other cafes in Brunswick and now we have some of the best cafes in Melbourne.
Like Ray, especially the pumkin olive etc pide. But if you really want great coffee it's better and more consistent across the road in the cafe beside the car park. Food's good too though not as exotic as Ray. Wish I could remember their name.
There are two cafes across the road in the car park do you mean Cafe Bellino or the newer Tre Espresso?? I think Ray's has AWSOME coffee so I would be really interested to try better coffee so close. P.S. Why doesn't this cafe have a score?
Ray has interesting, original food - and for the price they charge - it can't be beat. They were the first to do baked eggs and they always listen to how I want something done. They also don't have that nasty vinegared taste to their eggs - and the only other cafe that accomplishes that is Marios in Fitzroy (I mean - how hard can it be???) But the best thing about Ray is the coffee, Far out - it has to be the best coffee in melbourne - and it's consistantly good too - it seriously kicks ar$e in cafe stakes. Best Cafe in melbourne by a mile!!!
Ray does have good food and coffee, but the uneven service has struck once too often for me. Twice in a few months my order has just been forgotten - yes it's sort of cute for the wait-staff not to write things down, and seems to go with the funky who-cares decor, but... With so many good options floating around, Ray has to be a bit less "whatever" to fulfil its promise. Meanwhile I'll be elsewhere.
Ray - not just the best coffee in town, but in Australia I reckon. Much better than across the road. The smell in the cafe of the grinding coffee adds to the flavour. Try the french toast for a sweet treat, topped with sweet labna, maple syrup and pistachios - big enough for two to share - yummo!! BEST BEST BEST coffee you will ever taste.
I gave Ray another go today after getting tired of careless service and giving them a year or so off. The menu is surprisingly stable, almost disconcerting - seems like a 2005 time warp. And the service is as patchy as ever, with the order messed up. See ya...
I went to Ray yesterday and felt like I was under surveilance. Three new surveilance cameras mounted inside the cafe. One at the front and back and one above the counter. Seems like overkill, its not a bank. Whats with this?
You have done great work, nice to read this interesting post, i want to say thanks for sharing this post.
