European, Melbourne

After a visit to European, 161 Spring Street, Melbourne, Tel +61 3 9654 0811, even the tossers at Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide could see they were in trouble. How to reconcile such magnificent food with moronic review rule #3: "A breakfast menu is often the sign of a compromised restaurant". Get rid of the rule, perhaps? No... with all the credibility of Jessica Simpson commenting on a G8 summit, they blurt it out anyway, then cobble together some feeble exception. People like that don't deserve such fine Eggs Benedict. The best I've ever had.

It wasn't quite perfect, but it came close. The poached eggs were flawless... with deep, dark-yellow, soft-centred yolks (free range of course). The hollandaise was excellent. The muffins were fresh and toasty. And the thin-sliced ham had been grilled just right. The only thing missing was the potato, which, as I've explained before, is very much an optional extra when dining down under.

Other highlights of the menu include scrambled eggs, goats cheese and asparagas on sour dough; huevos madrilenos (baked eggs with black pudding and chorizo); Croque Monsieur (with a gruyere bechamel); and corn cakes with chutney, avocado and sour cream. Or, for a bit more fibre, try the toasted or bircher muesli with stewed apples and rasberries.

To round out the breakfast experience, European has excellent staff, serving very good coffee in a welcoming, wood-panelled environment. Just the place for a breakfast meeting if you happen to be up the Paris end of town... even if it is a tad expensive ($15.50 for my eggs).

I went back to European this morning, hoping to try the corn fritters, only to find that the menu has moved on. No more corn fritters. Bummer.

Luckily, the scrambled eggs with goats cheese and asparagas on toasted sourdough was there as a fall-back option. Another excellent dish. The asparagas may have been getting a bit old and woody at this end of the season, but the chef had carefully shaved back the stems to ensure a good result.

And the coffee is superb. Best Grinders coffee I've had. Magnificent, thick, creamy froth on my cappucino.

Tried the European on Cup Sunday and the food and coffee were spot on for quality.
Just make sure you check your bill carefully.
I ordered the $16:50 breakfast (toast, 2 poached eggs, bacon, tomato & mushroom) and asked them to hold the mushroom.
Was billed $19.50 instead. $11.50 for the eggs and $4 each for the bacon & tomato as "extras".
WTF????

First time breakfast at the Euro and I had the Croque Monsieur, best one I have ever had. The bechamel made it super special. Always great coffee.

Over the past few weeks I have had to opportunity to partake in a European breakfast', with a side of hollandaise, a flat white and an orange juice - at company expense, no less!

Absolutely delightful - fast, efficient and friendly service, and a very tasty, decently sized serving.

Recommended.

maybe I had a higher expectation after reading such good feedback from this blog but it's over-rated in my opinion... average eggs Benedict and seriously over-priced. Maybe I'll try the Croque Monsieur next time since I live just around the corner.

ps... I don't trust cappuccino drinkers. coffee makers disguise a shit coffee with chocolate on top.

i noticed a flurry of comments from the mysterious "exchef", all of which are welcome and good to have in the mix.

i disagree with the cappucino comment. a shit coffee is a shit coffee, chocolate or no chocolate. if someone serves you doggy-doo sprinkled with chocolate it's not going to fool anyone into thinking they're eating a brownie.

The service is pathetic and the staff are just downright rude. You are better off going to a farm full of animals.....

After reading this blog I went to Eurpoean for breakfast as it was close to where I was staying. Thanks for the guidance, I had the Eggs Benedict and they were superb, and the coffee was the best I have had since arriving in Melbourne 10 days ago. Staff were friendly and efficient also. I would definitely recommend and will go back on my next visit.

Still a great place for breakfast. Ignore the crude negative remarks above. Friendly staff, perfect eggs.
